The Sumida river is the symbol of water quality revival. It was much polluted in the1960s according to exclusive population increase. Sightseeing Boat stopped the operation. It was told that metal part of the buildings nearby was rapidly rusted by hydrogen sulfide which came from the river water.

Big effort was put into the construction of sewage works. As the sewage cover rate increased, water quality was improved gradually.
 Then sightseeing boat cruising reopened.

High bank wall disturbed the river view for long time. Lately walking deck has been constructed in many place. Complex of river bank and high buildings also offers attractive landscape.

There are many bridges along the river. Average distance of bridges is almost 500m.

The boats cruising between Asakusa and Takesiba pass through the bridges one after another.

The Kiyosu Bridge was  completed in 1928.
It's rare suspension type bridge.
