@Old warehouses and gas lamps along the canal give nostalgic taste. The
Otaru Canal was designed as the place where the cargo is landed from small
boats. Small boats carry cargo from the big ship out of the port to the
Canal. The canal construction completed in PXQR. It was 1300m long and
40m wide.
Warehouses and South Canal@
North Canal is preserved without being reclaimed. A half width of South
Canal was reclaimed.
After the construction of new port outside, the Otaru Canal had not been
used. The city government plannned to reclaim the Canal and build a road
in 1970s.
Many people wanted to preserve the Canal and there was a big argument.
The city government changed the plan to preserve a half width of The Canal.
However the argument existed still.
The construction work started in 1983.
